Finding a job in Québec may seem like an easy thing to do. In reality, it is not as simple as it may seem. I would like to share with you my knowledge, on how to land a job in Québec more easily. All the information included in this post was extracted from my detailed research on the web, as a future Quebec local and from my friends’ experience,
current locals in different regions of the province.
current locals in different regions of the province.
Number 1. Have Internet there. I have heard someone, thinking aloud, that Internet is not the most important thing that the first month you will be busier with other stuff and you will not need it. I don’t really know what these people are thinking, but not having Internet, means having no communication with the new world what so ever. Just think about it for a second – Internet is the main resource on governmental bodies, job search websites, rent ads, weather forecasts, not to mention keeping in touch with your family back home. So, get a good Internet connection!
Number 2. Do not expect that employers will come to your door and beg you to work for them. You have to remember that the main principle is promoting yourself or you will remain unnoticed. You can do this by any means you can, by posting your CV on the Internet, expanding your contact list or simply mentioning that you’re looking for a job, to any random person you meet in the street. People in Québec are quite friendly and they tend to help out others.
Number 3.80% of all jobs are hidden. Meaning, you will not find them on the net or in newspapers. They are mostly jobs, where others recommend you or that you accidentally find through a friend of a friend of a friend.
Number 4.Have the RIGHT kind of CV ready and at hand. What is the RIGHT kind of CV? In Québec, employers do not really pay that much attention to where you went to school, or for how many years you have studied medicine or something else. The first things they look at are your experience, and most of all your competences. So the main thing you should include is a nice list of what you can do, what languages you know, what are your personal skills and traits. The correct type of CV in Québec is called the CV à la québécoise. Also, avoid any personal information that could generate discrimination- forget about your photo, your age, your marital status or your nationality.
